Magazines/Databases heading

Most databases require a password, which is usually the 14-digit number of your library card entered with no spaces. Other databases require a username and password which you can obtain by calling the Library at 223-6228. We offer a wide variety of databases including those that offer magazine, journal and newspaper articles; research databases on specific subjects such as literature, music, art, science, business, health and readers' advisory. Additional databases are available for research in the library.

Art and Music
  • Oxford Art Online  - Comprehensive database covering all aspects of the visual arts from prehistory to modern times, international in scope. Use "library barcode" login to access from home.
  • Oxford Music Online - Includes The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The Oxford Companion to Music and The Oxford Dictionary of Music. Use "library barcode" login to access from home.
Biography
  • Biography Resource Center - Full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search. Now includes Who's Who.
Business
  • ABI/Inform - Includes scholarly, trade and local and regional business publications.
  • Business & Company Resource Center - Detailed company and industry news and information from Gale, including company profiles, brand information, industry rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodical articles. Available via EmpireLink, a project of the NY State Library, federally funded by LSTA grants.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library - click on 'View Publications' beside the word 'Business'.
  • General Business File ASAP - Analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends. Access a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings with full text and images available.
  • Hoover's - widely recognized as a leading provider of corporate data, Hoover's delivers in-depth industry analyses, information on a company's location, summary financials, top competitors and top officers for more than 40,000 public and non-public companies.
  • PROMT - Predicast Overview of Markets and Technology. Research on companies, the products and technologies they produce, and the markets in which they compete. Includes business and trade journals, industry newsletters, newspapers, market research studies, news releases, and investment and brokerage firm reports.
  • Salem Press E-Books - Access the Historical Encyclopedia of American Business. Click on 'Remote Access' and use your library card barcode to log in from outside the Library.

  • Discovering Collection - Geared toward middle and high school students. Includes reference content for the areas of Geography and Cultures, History, Biographies, and Social Studies.
  • EBSCO Searchasaurus - Full-text articles for children and young adults. Includes a general encyclopedia.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica for Kids- Comprehensive multimedia encyclopedia.

  • Grolier Kids - includes the New Book of Knowledge, Encyclopedia Americana and the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.
  • InfoTrac - Junior and Kids Editions - Magazines, reference books and newspapers for information on the elementary and middle-school levels.
  • Kids Infobits - Especially for students in K-5. A picture-rich interface helps access reference books and the best magazines for elementary students.
  • Kids Search - Similiar to Searchasaurus but has a new graphically-rich look and feel.
  • Novelist K-8 - Discover current and classic fiction titles that are popular with young readers. Contains materials for all K-8 grade levels and includes picture books, children's "chapter" books and young adult titles.

  • LearningExpress EBooks.com - Selection of online EBooks from Learning Express Library providing test preparation and practice in skills improvement.   • LearningExpress Library.com - Online practice tests of official exams such as Civil Service exams, AP, GED, SAT, U.S. citizenship, law enforcement, real estate, ESL (Spanish) skills improvement and more. Now also includes preparation courses for the SAT, ACT, GED and TOEFL, as well as review courses in math, reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and grammar.
