The Baldwin Public Library Children's Room includes a Homework Center,
an Arts and Crafts Room and Story Amphitheater.
Our Children's Room offers a wide variety of materials, programs
and services for children from infants to age 12, as well as teachers
and parents. The book collection includes toddler books, picture
books, beginning readers, and fiction and nonfiction books for all
reading levels. In addition, there is a SEPTA (Special Education
Parents and Teachers Association) collection and Parent's Collection.
Other materials include DVDs, CD-ROMs, audiocassettes and videocassettes.
Toys and puzzles are also available for use. Computers may be used
by children age 2 through grade six. Two early
literacy computers for children age 2 to Kindergarten have
been added to the Children's Room.
Services
include reference, reader's advisory, class visits and book lists.
One of the special functions of Children's Services at the Baldwin
Library is to serve as a center for children's programming and special
events. Story times are offered throughout the year for a variety
of age levels. Scheduled are Book Babies for 9 to 15 month-olds,
Mother Goose Story Times for 16- to 23-month-olds, Toddler Story
Times for 2-year-olds and Pre-School Story Times for age 3 through
Kindergarten.
In
addition, the Children's Room offers craft workshops, holiday programs,
book discussions, and special programs throughout the year. Featured
during the summer are Great Beginnings, the Summer Reading Club
and the Read-To-Me Club.
Family
Place Library
The
Library has been designated a "Family Place Library" in
partnership with the Middle Country Public Library. A Family Place
Library is a center for early childhood information, parent education,
emergent literacy, socialization and family support. Currently,
our Library is one of only 13 libraries in Nassau County to be competitively
selected for this honor. Learn and Play is the core program at each
Family Place Library. Each workshop consists of five 75-minute sessions
for parents and youngsters (1- to 3-year-olds) together. Each session
focuses on a topic, e.g. speech development, nutrition, physical
fitness, play and reading, etc. An expert from local service and
health agencies is on hand at each session to answer parents' questions
and concerns.
Homework
Help Center
An After-School Homework Center is in operation from late September
to early June. A certified teacher is available to assist children
in grades 2 to 6 with questions on homework. The service is available
from Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6PM (school days only). Registration
is required once during each school year by a parent.
For
more information on any of our Children's programs, please call
Wendy Rathjens, Head of Children's Services, at 223-6228.
