Summer 2008 Required Reading

Four reading assignments are required from all AP English Literature and Composition students this summer which will best prepare you for your first writing assignment in September.  The two works that must be read are Carol Gilligan's In A Different Voice and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye.  Next, all AP Literature and Composition students must read either two works by one author of the authors listed below or one work by each of two different authors on the same list.

More specifically, consider your chosen author(s)' literary style, major themes, cultural influences, choice of images and choice of words.  As you read, I recommend that you take notes on these elements, as this will prepare you for class in September.  Also, in Gilligan's work, consider what she writes about in relation to the way people think about relationships among "voice", gender, and patterns of moral reasoning.  Her observations will be helpful in discussing patterns, archetypes, and voice in the texts we study and the narratives we write.
